To The 11 Yr Old

Scout Leader:

The Patrol Counsellor:

To those of you who have never worked with "scouts" before this is an exciting and rewarding opportunity...what other calling is there where you can go canoeing, hiking, camping, make things, and just have FUN! As the 11 year old scout leader your official title is "Patrol Counsellor."

The scout troop is divided up into "patrols," the number of which depends on the size of the troop. We suggest that each troop have two patrols; a "junior patrol" comprised of the 11 year old scouts, and a "senior patrol" comprised of the 12 & 13 year old Deacon scouts.

Make sure that you have one of your scouts function as the Patrol Leader, and if you have enough boys you can also have an Assistant Patrol Leader. As the Patrol Leader the youth will make up part of the Court of Honour and will assist in planning shot and long term goals and activities for the troop. (for more information on see pages 5 - 17 in the Canadian Scout Handbook).

First Thing First:

Some of the priorities you need to assist each 11 year old scout to accomplish are the follows:

  1. Complete all of the Pioneer Level requirement shortly after the youth enters into your patrol

  2. Invest the new scout.

  3. Complete the Chief Scout Award application paying particular attention to the "Challenging Program" - requirement #6 - on the application form. This section deals with personal goals that the youth will set for the areas of Citizenship, Leadership, Personal Development, and Outdoor Skills. These goals must be more challenging - and cannot be the same - as what they will accomplish at the Pathfinder level. This application form needs to be filled out while the youth is still an 11 year old scout and his goals reviewed by the Court of Honor. Once the youth moves up into the senior patrol (12 & 13 year old) then these goals should be reviewed by the youth to make sure they haven't changed.

  4. Complete the four activity badges at the Voyageur level and at least 4 Challenge badges and one season of the Year Round Camper Award.

  5. Scout House trucks must be purchased early in the year so that you can make sure that you have them for week 32. It is suggested that you purchase them in September to guarantee availability.
